Introducing the Torres Strait Air Cadet Pilot Program based in the Torres Strait

The program has the capacity for the intake of 4 cadets every 6 months. The goal is for 50% intake to be indigenous students. The program is led by Nathan James, the Head of Operations for White Star Aviation in Ballina. It is a unique program, as when the cadets undergo their training for their Commercial Pilot Licences the training is scenario-based on the charter routes of Torres Strait Air aircraft in the Torres Strait.

The cadets also complete the last sector of their CPL training in the Cessna 206 aircraft on Horn Island.

Over a 12-month period the cadets obtain their CPLs and then their Instrument Ratings over 2 to 3 months. Once they have obtained both, they undergo the hiring process with Torres Strait Air and are offered an 18-month employment contract.

Torres Strait Air has inducted several pilots to date. Several pilots have now also left after gaining experience, knowledge and skills to move to their next flying jobs in larger Genaral Aviation aircraft as Captains or to the Airlines as First Officers.

Both Nathan and Daniel are very passionate about this Cadet Pilot Program as both are natural teachers. Both are flight instructors.

Both are also on the same understanding that Torres Strait Air is an ideal stepping-stone company for pilots to further their careers in the aviation industry. With the current demand of the aviation industry requiring pilots increasingly. We are pleased to know that we are making contribution to the progression of suitably trained and qualified pilots.

Daniel is very passionate about supporting the Torres Strait Island Community through the aviation industry. Not only is the Cadet Pilot Program designed to help young indigenous peoples begin their careers in the aviation industry (goal of 50% indigenous intake) but it also supports Torres Strait Air by providing specifically trained pilots for the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Region, which then enhances our ability to provide a safer and more available service to the Torres Strait Island community.
